Disney’s Netflix deal makes streaming libraries less tidy

Disney is licensing selected series to Netflix while keeping them on Disney+ and Hulu. The extra access is useful, though some titles double as timed promotion.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Disney is putting selected shows on Netflix while keeping them on Disney+ and Hulu. The deal includes the first two seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, every season of Will Trent, and the complete run of Felicity. TheWrap says Percy Jackson gets a three-month Netflix window ahead of season three’s November 20 premiere on Disney+. Tom’s Guide reports that Felicity arrived October 7 and Will Trent is due November 3.

Netflix becomes a discovery shelf, while Disney keeps the next chapter close. Someone who starts Percy Jackson on Netflix may need to switch services for the new season. Disney can put its returning shows in front of a larger audience; Netflix gets recognizable titles to fill out its catalogue. For viewers, the bargain is simple access with a subscription-shaped asterisk.

The deal also makes “where can I watch this?” a moving question. Felicity is complete, so another home for the series is straightforward. A current show such as Will Trent has a promotional role: its Netflix arrival precedes a new season, according to TheWrap. That is sensible business, though it turns the streaming catalogue into a route map whose exits keep changing.

Disney’s library now has two jobs: earn licensing money and point some viewers back toward Disney+. The useful detail to watch is how long each title stays. Percy Jackson gets three months on Netflix; that window gives the series a broad sample while Disney retains the next season as its own destination.
