A Glee reboot has a series order at Disney+ and Hulu, but almost everything viewers might want to know about it is still missing. TheWrap reports that Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk have written a script; the platforms have revealed no logline, production details or returning cast. Murphy previously told Entertainment Tonight that he had spoken with around 10 original cast members, who were enthusiastic about the idea, according to TheWrap. Reuters also reports that the services announced the return without giving a release timeline (via AOL).
That leaves the reboot’s most important choice unanswered: what does Glee have to say now? A return built around familiar performers and musical numbers could turn into an extended reunion, with the old title doing most of the work. The original’s reputation for boundary-pushing dialogue and storylines, noted by TheWrap, gives the new series a more interesting target. It can take risks with its own characters and setting, instead of treating recognition as a substitute for a point of view.
Streaming offers room to push those boundaries, TheWrap argues. Room alone is a flimsy creative plan, though. The first useful clue will be the new show’s premise, followed by whether its cast gives the story a life beyond callbacks. A script from the original creators is a promising start; it is not yet a reason for the club to meet again.
