Chris Meloni will return as Elliot Stabler for the 600th episode of Law & Order: SVU. TVLine reports that Stabler last appeared at the start of Season 27, briefly meeting his former partner Olivia Benson outside the wake for their former boss, Capt. Donald Cragen. He told Benson he loved her. Season 28 is scheduled to return October 8.
A milestone episode can make a reunion feel like a gift to longtime viewers. It can also turn a character into a commemorative plaque. Showrunner Michele Fazekas said she wanted Meloni in more episodes, but his schedule did not allow it. She also said she did not want his appearances to feel like a stunt and that they had to mean something. A single return puts that standard to a clean test.
The Benson-Stabler bond already has a strong emotional button: that declaration of love. Pressing it again would be easy, and probably less interesting than asking what the two characters do with it now. The episode has a chance to make their history affect the present, rather than treating the number 600 as permission to replay the greatest hits.
That would serve both returning fans and viewers who encounter Stabler through this guest appearance. Recognition gets him into the story; a present-tense reason to be there has to keep him in it. The episode’s milestone deserves a story, not just a familiar face beside the cake.
