A limited series gets to make a promise: this story has an ending. Netflix has renewed The Beast in Me for a second season, despite its original billing, and Claire Danes will return as writer Aggie Wiggs, according to IsMyShowCancelled. Showrunner Howard Gordon said the team agreed to make another season only if it found a story worthy of the first. The report says the drama received nine Emmy nominations and won two.
That is a sensible standard, and a difficult one to meet. The show’s premise centers on Aggie finding a subject for a book in Nile Jarvis, her neighbor and a former prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance. The reported setup makes suspense out of Aggie’s pursuit of the truth. A second season cannot simply put the same pieces back on the board and call the repetition suspense.
The renewal’s promise lies in the word “story.” A fresh season needs a reason Aggie’s life and work continue to generate drama. Returning to a successful character can be satisfying, but the limited-series label suggests a story designed with an ending in mind. Emmy recognition may explain why Netflix wants more; it does not supply the next chapter.
Danes’s return gives the season a clear center. The test is whether the new plot changes what Aggie is pursuing and what that pursuit costs her. Gordon says the team found a worthy story. Now the season has to make that claim feel true on screen.
