The Gentlemen’s casino gamble gets a bigger cast

Season 3 sends Eddie and Susie to build a casino in the Middle East. Its new cast raises the stakes, but the premise needs more than star power.

The Gentlemen

A casino in the Middle East is Eddie and Susie’s next criminal enterprise, and season 3 has recruited Robert Carlyle, Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom for the trip. Production has begun in the U.K. and Morocco, with Dexter Fletcher, Bruna Marquezine, Ed Speleers, Saffron Burrows and Bugzy Malone also joining the cast, according to Variety.

The returning ensemble includes Theo James and Kaya Scodelario, alongside Ray Winstone and Joely Richardson. Variety reports that the season will run for eight 60-minute episodes. Its logline puts Eddie and Susie in charge of an ambitious casino project, with danger threatening to turn the Duke’s appetite for expansion into a liability.

That setup has a useful built-in tension: casinos are businesses designed to make risk look orderly, while this show’s criminal world keeps reminding everyone that control is mostly a performance. The premise can give Eddie and Susie a new arena for their partnership, provided the casino creates problems specific to them instead of serving as a glossy new backdrop for familiar gangland manoeuvres.

The casting is a lively mix, and Wood and Bloom reunite after working together on the “Lord of the Rings” films. Still, a famous roster can make a season feel crowded before it has a story. Variety notes that Daniel Ings, who played Eddie’s brother Freddy in the first two seasons, is not listed among the returning cast; Giancarlo Esposito is absent from the list too. Those omissions leave a conspicuous question about which relationships and rivalries will carry forward.

Eight hour-long episodes give the casino plot room to grow. The sharper test is whether Eddie and Susie’s expanding ambition produces consequences that feel personal, rather than merely expensive.
