Hulu has ordered Ryan Coogler’s reimagining of The X-Files to series. Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel will play two FBI agents assigned to a long-shuttered division for cases involving unexplained phenomena, Variety reports. They are new characters, according to a source cited by the publication, rather than versions of Dana Scully and Fox Mulder. Coogler wrote, directed and executive produced the pilot; Jennifer Yale is the series’ showrunner and executive producer.
That choice gives the project a practical advantage: the new agents can inherit the job without being asked to impersonate television’s most famous paranormal investigators. The original series ran for 11 seasons, according to Variety. Its mythology is already a very full filing cabinet. New characters offer a way to open a drawer without making the whole show a reunion exercise.
The setup also puts the partnership back at the center. “Vastly different” agents forming an unlikely bond is familiar procedural machinery, but it suits a series built around phenomena that resist easy explanation. One agent can be the skeptic, the believer, or something less tidy; the useful tension will come from how their methods change when the evidence refuses to behave. The logline gives the show a workplace and a premise. It does not yet tell us what makes these two people specifically good company for an hour.
Coogler has said the team wants to honor what Chris Carter created while finding its own way into that world. That is the right ambition, and a harder task than keeping the familiar title. The show needs cases strange enough to justify the department, plus characters compelling enough that viewers care when the case file closes. A series order buys it the room to try. The first mystery should belong to these agents, not arrive wearing Mulder and Scully’s old coats.
