Tulsa King

Paramount+ renewed Tulsa King for a fifth season ahead of season 4, which premieres Oct. 16. Production has moved from Atlanta to New York to fit a storyline that has Dwight “The General” Manfredi returning to his mafia roots, TheWrap reports. Scarlet Rose Stallone, who plays Spencer, has been promoted to series regular. Erik Palladino, Glenn Fleshler, Anthony Skordi and Nickola Shreli are joining the season 5 main cast.

The New York move gives the renewal a story-shaped reason to exist. A series named for Tulsa is sending production elsewhere as its central character turns toward the past. That shift could put pressure on Dwight’s attempt to build a legitimate empire: returning to the world that made him may sharpen the conflict between the life he wants and the one he knows how to lead.

There is a risk in making “mafia roots” do all the dramatic work. A change of setting can supply new faces and a different backdrop, but it cannot by itself change Dwight’s predicament. The season 4 setup has him trying to legitimize his empire and protect his crew from corrupt politicians and new enemies while dealing with a personal loss. Season 5’s direction could make that ambition harder to sustain, if the pull of his old life has real consequences for the people around him.

The new cast members will matter most if they complicate his choices. New York gives the story a direct route to Dwight’s past; the writing still has to make that past dangerous in the present.
